The Community Lawyer is a non-profit advocacy project. Since 1989, we have provided a free, non-partisan legal resource for concerned citizens in the Winchester, Connecticut area. The Community Lawyer does not provide private legal services. We teach citizens the skills they need to effectively advocate on their own behalf and that builds the self-confidence necessary to bring about changes in their community.
Politicians and local governments often forget that their job is to serve the communities they represent. The Community Lawyer helps citizens realize that they do have a powerful voice for affecting change in their local governments and communities. Read examples of “Citizens in Action“!
In letters to the editor, articles, radio and cable access television interviews along with attendance at town board and commission meetings as well as state hearings, the Community Lawyer informs the citizenry on issues of public concern and advocates on its behalf.
The concept of the community lawyer was pioneered and is funded by The Shafeek Nader Trust for the Community Interest, a charitable and educational organization. In April 1994, the Citizen Advocacy Center was founded in Elmhurst, Illinois and has become the second community advocacy project founded by the Trust. More community advocates are needed to expand the project. Please contact us for more information.
